‘Coolest’ Winter Destinations in NZ

As winter finally starts to cast its frosty shadow over the country many of us are starting to plan our mid-winter getaways hitting the slopes up the mountain or finding a secluded winter spot to relax in. When winter hits you are normally faced with two options: escape to the Pacific Islands or bunker under in New Zealand. Here are some fantastic destinations for the latter choice.

Matakana

Set in the rolling green hills, vineyards and beaches at the top of the North Island lies the picturesque settlement of Matakana, 50 minutes from Auckland city, with an atmosphere in winter just as vibrant and relaxing as in the peak of summer. The farmers market, held every Saturday, is a mecca for foodies who revel in fresh and artisan produce. A wine tour is perhaps the best way to spend your time in Matakana, Brick Bay and Ascension providing first class options in that regard. Wrap up warm with a scarf and beanie and walk the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail after your meal at Brick Bay, which is a lovely 2km trail of art works by creative Kiwi artists.

Ohakune

Ohakune is one of the adventure capitals of New Zealand, only a 20-minute drive away from the Turoa ski field on the impressive Mt Ruapehu. Skiing at Turoa is arguably New Zealand’s best with one of the southern hemisphere’s longest vertical descents and New Zealand’s highest ski lift. Whether its bike trails, the Tongariro Crossing, jet boating, kayaking or the stunning alpine trails up the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, Ohakune has it all. For those more suited to a luxury ski holiday, the Chateau Tongariro Hotel, a short drive from Ohakune, provides guests with a vintage elegance at the base of Whakapapa Village.

Lake Tekapo

Glorious by day and dazzling by night, Lake Tekapo, in the heart of Mackenzie country, is one of the purest and stunning spots in the entire country. Tekapo is part of the UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, making it the best spot in the country for stargazing. From Christchurch you drive three hours’ south-west into the heart of Mackenzie Basin. The town itself faces north across the incredible turquoise coloured lake and the dramatic rise of the Southern Alps (if you arrive in the middle of winter, the snow peaked mountains make for a breath-taking vista).
