Moving blankets… are they worth it?
When you’re preparing to pack for a move, your list of supplies usually includes boxes, tape and packing materials. These are all easily recycled after your move. But should you also consider purchasing moving blankets when you could use other blankets instead? Here is a guide to moving blankets and how they help your move go better.
What are moving blankets?
A moving blanket is not like a normal blanket. They’re usually large, heavy-duty, thick, woven blankets made from a polyester and cotton blend. They’re designed to absorb shock and prevent scratches to furniture with hard surfaces. Lighter weight moving blankets are designed to cover soft furniture to prevent them from getting dirty or stained during the move. In the moving industry, moving blankets are essential for every move, large or small.
The other type of moving blanket is also known as a moving or furniture pad. These are smaller, thicker pads designed to help you slide heavy furniture across wood or tile floors without scratching either surface.
Why use moving blankets?
Moving blankets serve two purposes on moving day. First, you can use them to wrap furniture or large objects to prevent damage from knocks. Secondly, you can use them strategically throughout your house, such as on bannisters to prevent damage from accidental knocks while carrying objects down stairs. They’re designed to make moving easier, and anything that makes the job easier is worth using.
How to use moving blankets
Wrap large objects in the moving blanket. Treat them like a parcel, folding tidy corners and seams and securing them with tape. Wrap the tape around the entire object to make a strong seal. Small strips will come apart.
When loading the truck, place moving blankets between objects and boxes to prevent them from moving or knocking into each other during transit.
Is the extra cost worth it?
The simple answer is yes. Moving blankets are relatively inexpensive for the protection they provide. Even though we all like to save as much money as we can when moving, the cost of damage to your belongings far outweighs the cost of purchasing moving blankets.
They also pay for themselves by keeping your large items clean. There’s more than enough to do when unpacking without needing to clean all your furniture as well. If you don’t think you’ll use them again any time soon, you can always sell them on TradeMe to recoup some of the expense, as well as helping to make another person’s move go much smoother.
Of course, we provide moving blankets as standard equipment, so when you hire us to manage your move, you have the assurance your belongings are well-protected.
