As we count down to the silly season, we thought we’d share five common moving misconceptions, starting with the best day to move house. How many of the following did you think were true?
1. The best day to move house is Friday
Friday is an excellent day to move house, usually because most settlements are done on a Friday and you have the entire weekend to pack, move and unpack. However, as most people think Friday is the best day to move, moving companies can be very busy on this day so availability can be limited.
The best day to move is actually the day of the week that best suits your circumstances. The key to making your move a success is good planning, done well in advance of the move and by hiring a good moving company to make everything go smoothly.
2. Moving is messy and stressful
Part of the reason we find moving so stressful is because nobody enjoys change. Moving is only ever messy and disorganised if you don’t plan your move properly. Moving is actually a great opportunity to reorganise your home, declutter and make a fresh start.
The key to a tidy, organised move is good planning, teamwork and getting help from professional movers. We move people from one home to another every day, so if you want to eliminate mess and stress, give us a call.
3. At least one item will get broken or go missing
Yes, accidents happen during moves. Packing your entire house, loading it onto a truck and unpacking it again invites human error. However, professional movers have the techniques, experience and equipment to mitigate breakages.
You can minimise or eliminate breakages by making sure everything is professionally packed. You can also protect yourself with moving insurance which covers you for breakages, damage, repairs or replacement. Also tell your movers if any item needs special handling. Communication and careful handling will get you moved in one piece.
4. All boxes are the same
A common misconception about moving is that any box will do. They’re all corrugated cardboard, so why pay for moving boxes? The difference is important. Moving boxes are designed to carry weight. They’re often double layered for impact resistance. They’re purpose built for moving and will always outperform a standard box.
The same applies to packing tape. Unlike sellotape or masking tape, packing tape is strong and performs well under pressure. It’s designed to stick to cardboard to seal boxes so they don’t split in transit. You should never use anything else.
5. All moving companies are the same
Our final misconception about moving is the most inaccurate of the five. While we all have the same end goal – to move you from A to B – price, service, experience, extras, and availability are all different from one moving company to another.
Do your research before you hire a moving company, ask for a detailed quote, find out what services are included as part of the quote and compare. If you’re moving over the holiday season, stay safe and we hope 2022 is a better year for everyone.
