Getting all your utilities and services switched over is one of the most common things that gets overlooked when moving house. There are so many other things to remember and do. Unless you’re a ninja when it comes to organisation, these important tasks can end up being a headache if forgotten, and that’s the last thing you need with a house to organise. Here’s a checklist to help you make a smooth transition.
The ‘must dos’ before you move
Gas and electricity
As soon as you know your new address and the date you’re moving, organise to have these services connected at your new home and disconnected at your old one. Timing is important. You’ll need power on moving day, so arrange to have it cut off at the end of the day. Similarly, you’ll want power connected at your new home the morning of moving day or the night before.
Phone and internet
Every year that passes we become more reliant on the internet and our smartphones. For many people, they are essential services. Again, arrange to have these services connected as soon as you know your new address.
Water, sewage, rubbish and recycling
Many of these services are covered by your local council. Tick these off your list so you know what services are available, when and at what cost.
Insurance
Insurance is often handled as part of buying a new house, especially if you have a mortgage. However, don’t leave anything to chance. Make sure your insurance company is completely up to date, including your vehicle and any other insurance. This is a good time to check if your belongings are insured in transit. If not, talk to us about moving insurance.
The post office
Make sure you organise mail forwarding ahead of time to ensure there isn’t a period where mail is sent to your old address.
Your security company
If you have an alarm system for fire, smoke or burglary, make sure your security company has the system ready for when you move in.
The ‘nice to dos’ before you move
• IRD, RealMe and other government agencies
• Your employer
• Your bank and credit card provider
• Loan providers
• Other financial agencies
• Other insurance providers (health etc.)
• Magazines and subscription services
• Online shopping sites and accounts which use your address
• Clubs and organisations
• Your doctor, veterinarian and dentist
• Schools
And last but not least, remember to tell friends and family. While this may look like a lot of work on top of organising your move, it’ll save you from problems like missing mail or moving into a dark house.
