Are you moving soon? If the idea of packing up your life and relocating feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. Moving can seem like a daunting task, but as one of our recent customers, Johnny, shared – it doesn’t have to be as stressful as it sounds. With over five decades of experience in moving people locally, nationally, and internationally, Conroy Removals has the process down to a fine art.
We sat down with Johnny and Anna, who recently made the move from Dunedin to New Plymouth, to hear about their experience with Conroy Removals. Here’s their story:
Why did you decide to move?
My contract with the Highlanders wrapped up, and with nothing tying us to Dunedin, it felt like the right time for a change. Anna’s family is up in New Plymouth, so the decision kind of made itself, good surf, great coffee, and family nearby – hard to argue with that.
What do you both do?
Anna, 29, is a recruiter for a Wellington-based company and has been working remotely from Dunedin for the last two years. Moving to New Plymouth meant that she’d finally get to meet her coworkers in person, which was an exciting prospect. Johnny, 31, works as a content creator and digital artist, producing videos, design work, and photography for high-profile brands like the All Blacks, Roady, Panasonic, and Oppo. Basically, if it involves a camera, I’m into it.
What attracted you to New Plymouth?
In addition to being closer to Anna’s family, New Plymouth offers a lifestyle that ticks all the boxes. It’s got everything – epic surf, stunning walks like the Pouakai Tarns, and a solid coffee scene (Ozone and Public Catering, we see you). Plus, the city is perfectly located with easy access to both Auckland and Wellington, making it a convenient spot to stay connected with family and friends.
What was the most stressful part of moving?
Hands down, the fear that we’d open the truck and find a DIY jigsaw puzzle of broken furniture. You pack things thinking, “That should be fine,” but until you see your stuff arrive in one piece, there’s always that nagging worry that your couch is now a collection of “couch parts.”
Why did you choose Conroy Removals?
We did our research, speed, price, reliability, and Conroy’s nailed all three. We actually used previously when we moved down from Wellington, and they did such a solid job that we didn’t even consider anyone else for the move back up. When something works, you stick with it.
What did you like about Conroy Removals?
Everything was straight-up, no surprises, no sneaky extra fees. When you’re moving house and trying to keep your sanity intact, that kind of clarity is a lifesaver. But the real kicker? Nothing broke. Not one thing. We had some tricky pieces, a giant 6ft mirror, a glass-topped table, and they all survived unscathed. That alone deserves a standing ovation.
What could we do better?
Honestly, not much. The only hiccup (and this was more bad timing than anything) was that our street had just been resealed, so by the time we noticed, we had some tar tracked onto our floors. The New Plymouth team were absolute legends and got onto it straight away, but a little reminder to always throw down a blanket at entrances might be a good shout.
Any tips for other young couples moving inter-island?
It’s way more doable than you think! We funded a good chunk of the move by selling stuff on Marketplace. Our rule? Three piles, Yes, No, and Maybe. Then get rid of everything in the No and Maybe piles. If you’re hesitating over it, you don’t need it. Makes unpacking on the other side way easier too.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Just that we wouldn’t move without Conroy’s again. From the packing materials to the actual move day, everything was seamless. And having a team of absolute units lifting heavy furniture instead of us? Worth every cent.
