Preparing to move: what your movers need to know

Clear communication between you and your moving company always makes moving house go smoothly. If you’re preparing to move, we’ve detailed the key information you need to share with your moving company, from the moment you request a quote through to moving day. Here are those key points.

1. Avoid unwanted surprises with costs

When requesting a quote, it’s important to give your moving company a clear picture of any challenges beyond what you need moving and where. These are:

  • Large, difficult and heavy items requiring special handling, like a piano.
  • Difficult access to the property.
  • Long distance handling from the house to the truck.

Since COVID, we’ve changed the way we assess properties. We do our best to get the full picture from remote inspections, but the more information you can give us, the better. If you have any doubts, request an on-site assessment so we can physically note the potential challenges listed above, prepare accordingly and give you an accurate quote.

2. Access to your home

The landscape of suburban communities continues to change with denser populations. It throws up challenges for getting moving trucks close to properties on moving day. You’ll need to tell us if you live in any of the following:

  • A gated community.
  • An apartment or unit complex.
  • A crosslease property with a shared driveway.
  • Difficult access for large vehicles.

Work through the details of what’s needed to get the truck as close to your property as possible without unforseen delays. Talk to neighbours if you share a driveway to make sure the truck won’t block access for other vehicles.

3. Complete your packing before moving day

If you’re packing up your home, make sure you have done everything before moving day. Follow our packing tips and guidelines to avoid any problems with handling. If you can, as part of your packing process, put the boxes at the best collection point in your home for easy loading onto the truck.

Never overload boxes. The rule of thumb is to never put more weight in a box than one person can easily lift and carry. Putting too much weight in boxes is a recipe for injuries, accidents and breakages. Label boxes so your movers know what they’re carrying.

4. Make sure you’re available on moving day

Ideally, you should be available on moving day to allow your movers to access the property and ask any questions about what to move. Tell them about any potential problems and note any obstacles from the house to the truck. Let them know what you want unloaded first, so they can load it onto the truck last.

5. Leave the lifting to us

Once you have your movers organised, it’s best to keep clear and let them work. You can direct traffic where necessary and remain available for questions, but you become an obstacle if you get in the way, even if you’re trying to be helpful. It’s our job to do the heavy lifting and get you loaded efficiently and smoothly.

6. Plans change

It’s not uncommon for plans to change at any time from the quote to moving day. If anything changes, let us know as soon as you can so we can adapt our plans to suit. Our goal is always to make your move go as smoothly and possible, and a phone call to your service representative is always appreciated.
