Summer is rolling on and after spending the Christmas break with family and friends there is still so much more to enjoy – touch wood the sun continues to shine well into February and March. From Cape Reinga to Wellington, we are spoilt for choice, so where are the best summer getaways in New Zealand’s North Island?
The Bay of Islands are a magical summer destination for those enamoured with pristine beaches and a rich and quirky history. The backpacker trail leads its way to Paihia where bunk bed hostels, cafes and bars overlook the stunning sands. From there you can walk 30 minutes down the road to Waitangi and rewind the clock to when the Treaty was signed.
A short ferry trip across the harbour to Russell is also a must. The first capital of New Zealand is one of the most delightful spots in the country – fantastic beaches, rich history and awesome locals who seem to work 3 or 4 jobs in a day, from the front desk at the historic church in the morning to the deep fryer at the Fish N Chips’ shop in the arvo. For Aucklanders, the 3-hour journey is definitely worth the drive, even for the day or weekend.
For a summer stint of a completely different feel you have Taupo. While the top of the North island is a hot-bed of humidity, Taupo’s fresh air and refreshingly clear lake waters leave you feeling 100% pure with every turn and activity. Trout fishing, water sports, sailing, bungee jumping, skydiving, hot water pools, hiking, the list goes on and on. It doesn’t get any better than an early morning stroll on the lakeside with a coffee in one hand and your best mate tugging you along in the other.
We couldn’t write a piece about New Zealand’s best summer getaways without mentioning our hometown of Napier. The climate always greets you with a warm smile and the art-deco city streets transport you to a type of sleepy seaside Mediterranean town. One will pinch themselves and ask: Am I really still in New Zealand? The surrounding vineyards compliment the city to a tee, and the stony, rugged beach is the perfect backdrop for a stroll down Marine Parade.
Further South lies the gem of the Wairarapa – Martinborough. Only an hours drive from Wellington and you can find shelter from the wind in a small, charming vineyard town where the weather rarely disappoints. Stay in one of the funky local baches and rent a bike to explore the wineries in the surrounding area. The town square is full of laid-back locals and out-of-towners who enjoy nothing more than sipping on craft beer and eating out in the characteristic breweries and bars.
Most of us are now back at work, so the thought of strolling down Marine Parade or swimming with dolphins in the Bay of Islands is a tough one to contemplate. So why not jump online and book a couple more summer shindigs, it’s certainly not too late.
